Projects throughout the years…
The Reproductive System - Grade 9
Freshman year, I was assigned to make a presentation on the reproductive system and present it to the whole class. The purpose of this group project was to learn about and understand how the human body system functions. I contributed to the group by conducting research and designing the PowerPoint. To me, the only challenge was to take the project seriously while presenting it. In the end, I was successful in doing so and I felt a sense of accomplishment. This project helped me learn about the different portions in the reproductive system and understand how each component works. If I could do the project again, I would prepare more before presenting.
The Caregiver - Grade 10
Sophomore year, we had many fun projects, but “The Caregiver” was my favorite one. For this project, students were paired to create a husband and wife teamwork experience. Each pair was given a robotic baby that cried whenever it was hungry, too hot or too cold, wanted attention, needed a diaper change, or needed to be burped. This project taught me how to be good caregiver by testing my commitment and responsibility, patience, and communication skills. I learned that I could not get impatient, make rash decisions, or lose my temper because my reckless decisions could affect the baby’s health. Being a caregiver is not easy and it takes a lot of sacrifice from one’s day-to-day routines. For example, I had to shift my busy sport and club schedules around the baby to make sure it received all the proper attention needed. There were times where I was unable to shift my schedule, so I took the baby out in public with me to the golf course and mass on Sunday. School nights were difficult too because the baby woke me up five times each night for food, causing me to become sleep deprived the following mornings. Although being a caregiver is difficult, time consuming, and requires responsibility, this project has helped me decide that I am up for the challenge and want to be a caregiver in the future. It also spiked my interest in pediatrics because I want to be able to care for children and help them overcome their medical obstacles.
Cow Eye Dissection - Grade 11
Junior year, I was given the opportunity to perform a cow eye dissection. The purpose of the lab was to learn how the eye works and this was accomplished by exploring and identifying the different components to the cow’s eye. As someone with bad vision, this lab sparked my interest unlike any other lab. Because of the lab, I have a solid understanding that the human eye is an intricate optical system that combines the functions of the cornea and lens to focus light onto the retina. I learned that the retina translates the light into electoral signals to the brain, which helps to visualize the world. Through my hands-on learning experience, I was able to identify the choroid, blind spot, optic nerve, retina, sclera, vitreous humor, iris, cornea, pupil, aqueous humor, and the lens.
Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Practice - Grade 12
Throughout my Senior year of high school, I took various practice exams and hands-on learning projects to prepare myself for the CNA exam. Below, I have provided videos of different nursing practices. My class was granted the privilege of practicing at MERCY Hospital, which is next-door to Immaculata La-Salle High School. I learned how to use a gait belt, do and read a urine dip stick test, drain a urinary drainage bag, dress a patient with a weak arm, feed a dependent patient, provide denture care, assist a client with a bed pan, read medication labels, weigh a patient, make an occupied bed, check blood pressure, and much more! Learning these skills can be difficult at first, but once I accomplish it once, it becomes easy to do. These hands-on learning skills have helped me become more prepared for the real world when it comes to accomplishing these tasks. I have also gained an understanding on how my pediatric nurses have completed their day to day check-up tasks.
